The Value of Tenacity

book jacket of The HelpHow many rejections does it take for you to give up? Ten? Twenty? Forty?

Kathryn Stockett, author of the bestselling novel The Help, didn’t give up after even sixty rejections:

“The point is, I can’t tell you how to succeed. But I can tell you how not to: Give in to the shame of being rejected and put your manuscript—or painting, song, voice, dance moves, [insert passion here]—in the coffin that is your bedside drawer and close it for good. I guarantee you that it won’t take you anywhere. Or you could do what this writer did: Give in to your obsession instead.”

    • I had a similar reaction! These kinds of stories are very inspiring for me. Rejection is part of being a published writer, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy or that we don’t need support to know how to deal with it. Thanks (as always!) for taking the time to share your thoughts. 🙂
