Surprised (again) by Generosity

I thought I knew what he was going to say: … the vending machines. Would you please watch my laptop?

Yesterday I was sitting in a college library, waiting for my husband and doing some work on my laptop. I was in the “Please Talk” section of the library, sunk in a huge comfy chair. Across from me a student with his own laptop sat on a similarly comfy couch, concentration peeking through long dark hair and a beard in need of a trim—the scruffy kind that college-age men are proud to grow because they can—typing away while listening to music through the earbuds that seem to be standard issue for today’s student.

After a few minutes, he removed his earbuds, set his computer on the table in front of him, and looked my way. He pointed to the vending machine area. “I’m going over to…”

I thought I knew what he was going to say, and I nearly said “sure” before I realized he had said something else.

“… get a coffee from the machine. Can I get you anything?”

What Is Generosity?
